THE HISTORY OF ABEOKUTA CLUB

Abeokuta Club, a social and cultural institution that grew into a significant movement shortly after its inception, is one of Nigeria’s foremost clubs. Its inaugural meeting was held on 4th June, 1972, at the residence of its founding President, Late Chief Sobo Sowemimo, SAN, in Lagos.

It was subsequently formally launched in Abeokuta by the then three Akodes of Egba-land, His Royal Majesty, Late (Dr.) Oba Ademola II, Alake of Egbaland, His Royal Majesty, Late Oba Oyebade Lipede I, Alake of Egbaland, and His Royal Majesty, Oba Adesina Gbadebo, Alake of Egbaland, on the 14th day of August, 1972.

Before its formal establishment, Abeokuta Social Club existed as three separate branches — LagosIbadan, and Abeokuta. These groups later came together and unanimously agreed that the permanent site of the Abeokuta (Social) Club should be at Presidential Boulevard, Ibara, Abeokuta.

This decision led to the development of the present Club premises and paved the way for one of the Club’s key objectives:

“To establish a suitable Clubhouse at Abeokuta together with a string of chalets and recreational facilities attached to the clubhouse for the benefit of members and their visiting friends.”

From that point forward, Abeokuta Club evolved from being merely a social club into A Movement.

Objectives of the Club

  • Providing a Social Platform for all Egbas and their Friends
  • To promote unity of Egba land, unity among club members and champion Egba causes both at home and elsewhere
  • To provide educational, cultural, recreational and other facilities for the benefit of the members, the Egbas generally and their friends.
  • Establishing a rendezvous here in Abeokuta.
